On the 7th of March 2016 Google has officially removed the PageRank-Api for external users. But in-house Google carries on to use the PageRank. Thus the PageRank of a domain cannot be determined anymore by particular tools. More information here

This article explains and informs about the Google Pagerank. The PageRank is an algorithm developed by its eponym Larry Page at Stanford University. The PageRank is used by the searchengine Google to rank the Websites in their search engine results .

The evaluation scale of the Pagerank

The evaluation scale of the pagerank goes from 0 to 10. Ordinary Websites usually reach a Pagerank from 1 to 5. New websites usually don't reach a Pagerank of 4 or 5 at the beginning. Well optimized pages may reach a pagerank of 5 to 7. A pagerank of 8 or higher is rare and reached by sites like Wikipedia, Facebook or Twitter.

Qualitative evaluation of Backlinks

The basic principle of the pagerank says, that the relevance of a (html-)document rises, the more other relevant documents refer to that particular document. Here is the difference to Link Popularity: While Link Popularity simply considers the quantity of incoming backlinks, the pagerank in addition considers the quality of the incoming links. An incoming link of a site with a high pagerank increases the pagerank of a page more than an incoming link of a website with a low pagerank. Backlinks by websites with a high pagerank are thus better rated. That means, less, but good backlinks may possibly effectuate more than a high quantity of low quality backlinks. This benefit from the high pagerank of another website can be understood as an inheritance.

Relevant Keywords in Linktexts

Considering the inheritance of pagerank, there are more criteria besides the good pagerank of the referring page. For example the topical similarity of the two linked documents matters. Amongst other things, this may be achieved by having a linktext with regards to content and relevant keywords of the page being targeted. Therefore the linktext better be something like "Holiday in France" than "Click here". It is best if the optimised linktext is the same on all linking pages. Another driver is the quantity of links that emanate from the referring page. That is because the pagerank is being split by all emanating links. A page, that links to 10 other pages passes less pagerank than a page that only refers to one document. Thus the importance of a backlink is even higher the less links emanate from the referring page. At this point the pagerank-sculpting comes into play. Considering internal links on your own website you may influence the problem that the power of a certain pagerank decreases when a page has many emanating links. On pages that have important emanating internal links the emanating links of no importance, e.g. such as legal notice, may be equipped with the attribute rel="nofollow". Then the crawlers of the search engines will not index this link and evaluate this link as an additional emanating link of the page.

Hints for the Backlink-buildup

The pagerank of a page applies to internal as well as external links. It goes without saying that in doing so much less value is being attached to the internal links than to the external links. Nevertheless, when launching a new website or relaunching an existing internet application good internal links can achieve the first pagerank. Thus the important pages of a website should be referred by as many other pages of this website as possible. The most important points considering the buildup of Backlinks are summarized below:

  • the page referring to your own page should have a good pagerank
  • the pages being linked to each other should have a topical relation, whereupon the linktext should contain the relevant keywords of the page being referred to and whereupon the linktext should be the same on possibly all the referring pages
  • the amount of emanating links on the referring page should be low, so that most of the pagerank can be inherited; considering internal links, make use of pagerank-sculpting in order to reduce the amount of unimportant links
  • post backlinks to other websites with a good pagerank (minimum is Pagerank 4) on your own pages: if there is an accuracy of fit between the linktext and the content to be expected, the rating of the own webpage by the search engines is being improved
